Reviews
I find that restaurant reviews are a tricky subject to tackle. Food is a highly subjective matter. Not all dishes are made in exactly the same manner at all restaurants. I may prefer one restaurant’s version of something as simple as a hamburger than another restaurant’s take on it and someone (or everyone) may totally disagree with my opinion. Expectations are often missing from restaurant reviews (how did you expect that hamburger to look? Taste? Was it supposed to be thick and really juicy or do you prefer yours to be cooked a bit more etc…). I will try to be mindful of expectations as I write my reviews. With that said, See Dan Cook dishes out stars as follows:
1 star – Avoid like the plague.
2 star – A passable or serviceable establishment. Seek out other options if available, otherwise, set your expectations low and you won’t be too disappointed.
3 stars – A good meal was had, but you’re not feeling immediately compelled to go back and do it all again. You might consider recommending it to friends, but maybe with a few caveats.
4 stars – A better version of the 3 star establishment. You had a great meal there or if you’re a repeat customer, you consistently have good/great meals there. You’d recommend to friends and family and are looking forward to your next meal there.
5 stars – Nothing but the absolute best. A ‘death-row’ meal. You’d sell your own soul to eat there again. 2 words…French Laundry.
Note: I try not to let service play too much of a factor in my ratings system. I’m a food guy first, service second. Certain aspects of service, like food, can also be highly subjective and since I go to a restaurant to eat, I can usually overlook atrocious service if the food is really good, so I try not to let serivce have too much influence on an overall rating.
